What is wet processing in textiles?
Wet processing is the stage of textile manufacturing where fabrics are treated with water-based chemicals to change their appearance or properties. It covers three main areas: preparation (scouring, desizing, bleaching), coloration (dyeing and printing), and finishing (softening, wrinkle resistance, water repellency). Almost every garment you own has gone through wet processing at least once.
What is the difference between dyeing and printing?
Dyeing colors the entire fabric uniformly by immersing it in a dye bath so the colorant penetrates every fiber. Printing applies color to specific areas of the fabric surface, creating patterns or designs. Dyeing produces solid colors; printing produces motifs, stripes, or pictures. Both use similar chemistries but very different application techniques.
Can you dye synthetic fabrics?
Yes, but with limitations. Synthetic fibers like polyester, nylon, and acrylic require disperse dyes applied at high temperatures (often near boiling) to penetrate the hydrophobic fibers. Natural dyes do not work well on synthetics. Some synthetics — like Kevlar — resist conventional dyeing entirely and need pigmented alternatives instead.
What is the best dye for natural fibers like cotton and linen?
Fiber-reactive dyes (like Procion MX) are the industry standard for cellulose fibers — cotton, linen, hemp, rayon. They form a permanent chemical bond with the fiber, so the color stays vibrant through years of washing. For protein fibers (wool, silk), acid dyes give the brightest, most wash-fast results.
What is discharge dyeing?
Discharge dyeing is the opposite of regular dyeing: instead of adding color, you remove color from an already-dyed fabric using a reducing agent (usually sodium hydrosulfite or formaldehyde sulfoxylate). The discharged areas can be left blank or re-dyed a different color. It is how patterned black-and-white textiles like batik and some shibori effects are made.
How do I fix uneven dye on fabric?
Uneven dye usually has three causes: insufficient agitation, fabric that was not properly scoured first, or dye that has exhausted unevenly. The fix is to re-dissolve the dye in a fresh bath with hot water and a surfactant, then re-immerse the garment with continuous agitation for 20–30 minutes. Severely uneven results may need to be stripped and re-dyed from scratch.
Is professional dyeing worth it compared to DIY?
For everyday fabrics and learning, DIY with a fiber-reactive or acid dye kit works well. For expensive garments, technical fabrics (like Sunbrella, Kevlar, or performance wear), or when you need exact color matching, professional dyeing is worth the cost. Professionals control temperature, agitation, and chemistry precisely — the results are more even, more colorfast, and less likely to damage the fabric.
