A fabric engineered for functional performance rather than aesthetics. Examples: geotextile (civil engineering), medical textile (healthcare), protective clothing (military, fire), automotive (interior fabrics, airbags), filtration (water, air).
Civil engineering applications: soil separation, drainage, reinforcement, filtration, protection. Common materials: polypropylene, polyester, polyethylene. Tested per ASTM D4491 (permittivity), D4533 (tear), D4632 (grab tensile).
Woven geotextile: high tensile strength at low elongation - good for reinforcement. Nonwoven geotextile: higher permittivity, more flexible - good for separation and filtration. Both serve different functions.
Nonwovens for hygiene (diapers, wipes, feminine hygiene) is the largest by volume. Geotextile is the largest by area. Automotive textiles (interior fabrics, airbags, filters) is the largest by value.
Technical textile is engineered for function: high strength, chemical resistance, filtration, protection, conductivity. Regular textile is for aesthetics and comfort: apparel, home textiles. The materials and processes overlap; the target properties and testing differ.
