04 GARMENT BEHAVIOR TOPICS · AATCC / ISO CARE STANDARDS
Why a garment shrinks, stretches, stains, or fits the way it does.
Dimensional stability, stain chemistry, fabric-for-garment matching, and care protocols that respect fiber structure — written for people who actually wear the clothes.

Why engineers trust these guides
Garment behavior is applied fiber chemistry. Every guide here starts from the molecule — why cotton’s hydrogen bonds release in water, why polyester forgets its shape at 70 °C — and works up to the laundry room.
Frequently asked questions
Why do some shirts shrink in the wash and others don’t?
Un-shrunk (loom-state) cotton relaxes when first wet — the yarn’s twist releases, the fabric contracts. Pre-shrunk (sanforized) cotton has been through a controlled compressive shrinkage process that pre-empts most of that relaxation, so the finished garment stays close to its cut size.
What’s the best way to remove a grease stain?
Work from the outside in, lift (don’t rub) with a surfactant or a drop of dish soap, and rinse with cold water before laundering. Hot water sets oil stains — wait until the stain is fully out before applying heat.
Why does polyester hold odor?
Polyester is hydrophobic — it doesn’t absorb sweat the way cotton does, but it adsorbs body oils into the fiber’s surface. Bacteria feed on those oils and produce the odor. Higher wash temperatures or an enzyme-active detergent break the oils down.
Should I wash new clothes before wearing?
Yes — new garments carry residual dye, sizing chemicals, and finish auxiliaries from the mill. A first wash removes loose surface dye (so it doesn’t transfer to your skin), relaxes the fabric to its final dimensions, and clears chemicals that can irritate sensitive skin.
